Job Summary:
AMETEK IntelliPower is seeking a highly skilled and motivated R&D Manager to lead a multidisciplinary team of hardware, firmware engineers, and technicians in the development of advanced power electronic products. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in power electronics and a proven track record of leading product development from concept to production.
Candidates must be able to commute to offices in Orange, CA and Irvine, CA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of three — including hardware engineers, firmware engineers, and technicians—to deliver innovative products from concept through to production.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal departments and international teams to ensure alignment and successful execution.
- Perform critical hardware design tasks, including analog and digital control loop development.
- Contribute and lead firmware development and integration.
- Lead system level design, packaging to obtain maximum power density.
- Conduct MATLAB/Simulink simulations for system modeling and validation.
- Test, validate, and troubleshoot designs; perform root cause analysis of circuit issues.
- Prepare and present professional technical reports and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline, with a focus on power electronics. (Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering is preferred)
- 7 years of experience in power electronics, control systems, and various power converter topologies.
- 3 years of experience being a team leader.
- Understanding of AC-DC conversion (PFC), DC-DC isolated power stage, DC- AC variable frequency power stages
- Controls related to the various power topologies (PFC), DC-DC and DC-AC.
- Working experience in rack mounted products.
- Strong leadership & communication skills with the ability to manage technical teams and collaborate across departments.
- Working knowledge of online dual conversion UPS systems, Power conversion and power supplies.
- Proficiency in control loop design (PI, PID, feedforward, etc.).
- Experience with LC and LCL filter design, EMI filtering (common and differential mode).
- Skilled in MATLAB/Simulink modeling and analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven track record of launching successful products in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Due to the nature of IntelliPower’s programs and products, applicants must have the legal right to work in the U.S. and additionally must be legally authorized to access export-controlled information and source code.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in power electronics.
- Proven leadership abilities in building highly motivated teams accustomed to achieving excellence in a fast-paced environment.
- Good interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
- Familiarity with battery energy storage systems (Lead Acid, LiFePO4, etc.) for backup UPS applications.
- Experience with high power/high voltage systems and modular UPS designs, Power conversion and Power supplies design (e.g., N+1 parallel operation).
- Knowledge of military standards (MIL-STD-461F, MIL-STD-1399-300B, MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-167A).
- PCB design and layout experience using Altium.
- Expertise in magnetic design (inductors, transformers, high-frequency applications).
- Hands-on experience with soft-switching and resonant topologies.
- Background in motor drives, power supplies, or similar industries.
- Familiarity with GaN and SiC power components.
- Practical EMI design and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience managing full product life-cycle development.
